Professor in Food Microbiology

Professor of Microbiology at the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, College of Health and Applied Sciences, A’Sharqiyah University. I obtained his BSc. Degree in Medical Technology, from Jordan University of Science and technology, (Jordan) in 1990, M.Sc. Degree in Microbiology and Molecular Biology, from Yarmouk University, (Jordan) in 1993 and Ph.D. Degree in Applied Microbiology, from Georgia State University (USA) in 2006. I joined Yarmouk University, (YU) in 2006 as an Assistant Prof, and in 2017, I joined A’Sharqiyah University as an Associate Professor.

I have extensive academic and administrative experience. I am having over 18 years of teaching both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and has held HOD administrative posts at YU. I was a Chairman of the Biological Sciences Department for two years.

I chaired and participates in several committees both at the international and local (university, college, and departmental) level related to strategic plans, academic and curriculum development. I am serving as an external examiner for the Examination in Microbiology for BDS II human Disease I Professional Examination in General Pathology and General Microbiology and for the BDS III Oral Disease I Professional Examination in Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology that will be challenged by students in BDS II and III respectively at Oman Dental College.

I have more than fifty papers published in internationally refereed journals and conference proceedings. I am a member of the American Society of Microbiology and Society for Industrial Microbiology (USA) and many other national and international professional bodies.

Ph.D.               2006   Applied Microbiology, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA.

B.Sc.               1990   Medical Technology, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid- Jordan.

Microbes are fundamental drivers of ecological processes. Both physiologically and phylogenetically diverse, microorganisms drive biogeochemical cycling throughout terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. They also facilitate macro-scale diversity and community structure as agents of disease and/or beneficial role. My research interests: microbial ecology, the survival of bacteria in the environment, how microscopic aquatic organisms adapt to their rapidly changing environments, and their role in the production of novel bioactive agents. I study these organisms with a combination of modern molecular tools (sequencing and metagenomic analysis) and traditional microbiological methodology.  and I am excited to pursue new work using microalgae in the Phycoremediation (for the removal or biotransformation of pollutants, including nutrients and xenobiotics from wastewater and CO2 from waste air). Below are some areas that I am focusing on in research:

Medical Microbiology: Nose and skin carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in food handlers; antimicrobial susceptibility and Multidrug resistance, antibiotic susceptibility of biofilm-forming microbes.
• Biological control of different plant diseases using different bacterial strains both in vitro and in vivo
• Food Microbiology and sanitation
• Fermentation biotechnology.
• Biological control of soil-borne pathogens by using bacterial strains and some natural products.
• Microbial biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons, in fuel-contaminated soils, groundwater, and subsurface soils.
• Environmental biotechnology related to marine, freshwater, and subsurface ecosystems. • Biochemistry, ecology, and molecular biology of environmentally relevant microbes.
• Biodegradation by extremophilic bacteria.
• Drinking water and Wastewater Microbiology.
• The microbial ecology of hypersaline environments.
• Microbial ecology of aquatic environments.
• Phycoremediation of contaminated water.
